NH offers free job training for SNAP recipients
2024-03-06

The primary goal is to provide greater job opportunity for people on the Nutrition Assistance Program

New Hampshire (NH) is offering a unique opportunity for those receiving SNAP benefits by providing free job training. This initiative, launched about a year ago, is part of a broader effort to expand job opportunities for those who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).

In partnership with the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services, Manchester Community College and the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, this initiative allows SNAP recipients to access free courses through the community college. In addition, career counseling services are being provided to help individuals connect with job opportunities and improve key skills such as resume writing.

The head of the Department of Health and Human Services' employment support office, Kim Runion, explained that the goal is to help people start careers in fields such as health care, providing a pathway to upward mobility. Runion stressed the importance of this program by saying, "We hope our participants recognize, 'I can do this, I have the potential to do this, and there are resources available to help me.'"

This program, funded in part by the federal government and with a contribution from the New Hampshire Charitable Foundation, represents a joint effort to provide participants with opportunities at no cost. So far, there has been notable success, with 15 individuals completing job training programs in areas such as health care, technology and other fields.

The program is open to individuals over the age of 18 who are receiving SNAP benefits and are not receiving cash assistance from the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Program. Anyone interested can get more information by visiting dhhs.nh.gov/snap-et or by emailing snapet@dhhs.nh.gov. This is a significant step in providing opportunities and support to families in need in New Hampshire.
