The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services (DHS) has issued an urgent warning to Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients to protect their Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) cards from theft devices. These devices, known as skimmers, steal card information by reading the magnetic stripe at point-of-sale (POS) terminals and ATMs, creating cloned cards.
Philadelphia and southeastern Pennsylvania have seen a significant increase in SNAP benefit theft due to these skimming devices. DHS has reported these incidents to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food and Nutrition Service, which oversees the SNAP program nationally.
Dr. Val Arkoosh, DHS Secretary, emphasized the importance of fraud prevention: 鈥淲e work diligently to ensure that benefits reach those who need them. Don't fall victim to identity theft. Inspect card readers before you use them and if you suspect a device, report it immediately."
To protect against information theft, DHS recommends Pennsylvania residents follow these tips when using POS terminals and ATMs:
If you suspect your EBT card has been compromised, report the possible fraud to your local County Assistance Office (CAO) and request a replacement card by calling Conduent, the DHS EBT contractor, at 888-328-7366. Avoid using third-party applications to verify EBT balances, as they may not be secure.
To report suspicious theft activity, call the DHS fraud tip line at 1-844-DHS-TIPS (1-844-347-8477) or file a report on the State Office of Inspector General website. For additional inquiries, contact the DHS Office of Revenue Maintenance.
This notice underscores the importance of protecting EBT cards to ensure continued access to SNAP benefits. With information theft on the rise, it is crucial that beneficiaries take preventative measures to safeguard their critical resources. Cooperation between the public and law enforcement is vital to combat fraud and protect consumers.
By staying informed and vigilant, SNAP beneficiaries can help prevent the theft of their benefits and secure needed support for their families.
