Another tactic used by criminals is to trick cardholders into revealing personal information. Scammers pose as officials of programs such as CalWORKs, sending messages claiming that the recipient's card has been compromised. These messages often ask for sensitive details, such as EBT card number, PIN or even Social Security number.

Steps to Protect Your Benefits

To avoid becoming a victim of these scams, SNAP recipients are advised to:

• Do not share your PIN: Keep your PIN private and periodically change the password, especially before receiving benefits or after making large purchases.
• Monitor your EBT account: Frequently review your account for suspicious activity. If you notice anything unusual, change your PIN immediately.
• Inspect card readers: Always check for suspicious devices or add-ons at ATMs or terminals where you use your card. Also, cover the keypad when entering your PIN.
• Ignore suspicious messages: Never respond to messages or emails requesting personal information. Instead, contact your local office or customer service directly to confirm any problems.

What to do if your benefits are stolen

If you suspect you have been a victim of EBT benefit theft, act quickly:

1. Call EBT customer service at 877-328-9677 or your caseworker.
2. Complete and submit EBT Form 2259 to officially report the theft.
3. If cash benefits were stolen by fraud, you must also file EBT Form 2259A.

It is important to remember that stolen benefits may not be reimbursed if unauthorized withdrawals are made prior to notifying customer service. Also, be sure to store your documents securely and dispose of them properly, as well as maintain security on your electronic devices.
